Support rape crisis centers and enter to win an Advance Copy of Red Hood’s Revenge, by Jim C. Hines.
Then, you can read about an LJ theme that took off 6 years ago for a few days, just about 4 months before I joined livejournal. As described by
In August of 2004,
I don't know how to shift from personal anecdotes to statistics. I know that every adult woman I know has either experienced sexual assault or counts herself lucky to have not. Not "normal" -- lucky. Normal is holding your keys between your fingers when you walk across the parking lot. Normal is first dates in well-lit places with easy public transit home. Normal is never going to a party without a female friend, and checking in with each other every half-hour. Normal is all that and more... and managing not to be assaulted is still a matter of luck.
This gave me chills. Not only because it is The Truth™. But because people used to look at me liked I'd grown horns when I'd say it and it is good to see others recognize how important (and scarily so) luck is in the equation.
So - Sexual Assault Awareness Month - emphasis on awareness. Spread the word.
